The potentiometer can be any type that allows manual control of its resistance. The total resistance value of the potentiometer should be fairly high; etc., a 1kΩ potentiometer will work good for a 9V battery.

When selecting a DC motor, you need to consider several characteristics that specify the electrical properties of the motor. This includes:

A PWM DC motor controller can supply voltage in pulses, changing the ratio of the pulse to the pulse period which is called the duty cycle.

The 555 Timer is capable of generating PWM signal when set up in an astable mode. In you are not familiar with the 555 Timer you can check my previous tutorial where I explained in details what’s inside and how the 555 Timer IC works.

You can always show your support by sharing my articles and tutorials on social networks. It’s the easiest way to support my work that costs nothing and would definitely be appreciated!

As soon as the capacitor charges, it quickly discharges through diode D2 and the variable resistor RV1 into pin 7. During the discharging process, the output of the 555 timer drops to 0V and switches “OFF” the transistor. Turning the variable resistor adjusts the speed of the motor.

I am not the most knowledgable when it comes to the maths involved, so please forgive me if it completely screwed the equasions and limits. I hope my intentions were made clear and if you could help, that would be much appericated. Thanks, Nick

The speed of a DC motor is directly proportional to the supply voltage. A simple way to control the speed of a DC motor is to regulate the supply voltage with pulse width modulation (PWM).

Three or more wires are needed. Insulated wires work best as they prevent wires from crossing and the battery from short circuiting.

It is similar to the method adopted for DC shunt motor. But in DC series motor, the control resistance may be connected directly in series with the supply. The circuit is shown below.

The armature control method is used where speed below the no-load speed is required. It also has poor speed regulation and low efficiency.

The PWM controller accepts the control signal and adjusts the duty cycle of the PWM signal according to the requirements. PWM waves with various duty cycle are shown in the figure below.

In this tutorial, we’ll be discussing DC motor speed control with STM32 PWM and L293D H-bridge motor driver. I’ll also show you the DC_MOTOR library (driver) that I’ve developed for STM32 microcontrollers and discuss how it works and how it’s been built in this way. And we’ll create 3 different example projects with STM32 uC and DC motors.

The output of the 555 timer can sink or source a current of 200mA to the load. So if the motor that we want to control exceeds this rating we need to use a transistor or a MOSFET for driving the motor. In this example, I used a (TIP122) Darlington transistor which can handle a current up to 5A.
